Course description:
This course provides the students a wide information about urban planing since pre-inka times until current days. The course also prepares them for what they will see during their stay in the Cusco area.
The material we use are: transparencies, slides, handouts, a video, field visits and tours they will take during their stay.
Visits are suggested (time depending) to the following places:
University of Cusco, architecture school / Visits to archaeological sites, Colonial monuments and neighborhoods. (Included in tours)
Academic objectives:

The students will learn that architecture is a whole and it includes the space planing; the housing, the display of the cities and the road network.

The students will see the different types of stone carving and how they are placed together.
-
They will have a different view of the construction of cities; thus, there is a relationship between each city and a totem, which could be an animal.

They will realize the connection of each construction with religion and magic.
-
They will understand what a Patrimony of the World is and how it should be preserved as such.
-
They will see slides of actual buildings with colony constructions and how architects incorporate modern comfort into these buildings.ç
-
They will notice actual construction codes for building, placing signs, painting walls, and placing balconies and so on.

They will gain an understanding of the use and treatment of spaces according to the needs and thinking of diverse cultures over time, and of how they planned the land according to the uses they intended for it.

The students will learn to appreciate the evolution of styles according to the influence of new cultures that occupied the territory.
Achievements:
At the end of this course the students will have greater appreciation of our culture and know that our cities are the result of hundreds of years of history.
Most importantly, they will know that behind each city, and each construction there is a reason and a philosophy. |
