Name of the Seminar: Ecology
Professor: Gustavo Ruiz Phd.
Course Description:
Peru’s wealth in ecology is probably the greatest worldwide . That gives us the opportunity of sharing with our students some knowledge on Peru’s diverse ecosystems, and learn the causes of such a diversity.
The location of Peru in the planet (tropical latitude) and the existence of the High Andean range (altitude) allows the existence within our territory of 84 out of the 104 ecosystems of the world.
The relationship of man with the natural environment has dramatically changed in the modern times: The irrational use of the resources put our planet facing the challenges of survival. Traditional cultures had a different approach to the nature, as man was “part of the creation”.
We will therefore analyze the way how ancient cultures and even the traditional cultures today have a respectful attitude towards nature.
Ecology implies also an understanding of how man’s behavior affects the nature. We will then, analyze the concepts of Deep & shallow ecology that encompasses a change on the ethic collective attitude and behavior.
Academic Objectives:
- Students will learn about the bio diversity of Peruvian territory.
- They will be aware of the fragile ecosystems of the planet and will get involved in activities promoting awareness once they go back home.
- They will get familiar with the Andes and Amazon environments and wildlife.
Achievements:
By the end of this course students will gain a clearer understanding on the diversity of ecosystems in Peru.
They will be able to compare the climatic conditions of Peru with their own countries or places they visited before.
They will develop a critical thinking on the concepts of “deep ecology” and understand how modern man may learn from traditional peoples. |
